Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible revolutionized the German language. A show at the Wartburg in Thuringia honors this achievement.

Eisenach.

In just eleven weeks, Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German at the Wartburg near Eisenach. A new special exhibition at the Wartburg is dedicated to the translation of the Bible, with which Luther wrote world history 500 years ago.

The show “Luther translated. Of the power of words” honors the linguistic achievement of the church reformer in an authentic location and at the same time draws parallels to the present day, said curator Grit Jacobs. Starting this Wednesday, around 60 objects from the 13th to the 21st century will be presented in the anniversary exhibition.

These include illuminated manuscripts, rare editions of the Bible and original records of Bible revisions. In addition, 30 modern editions of the Bible on desks invite you to leaf through them until November 6th. Among other things, the show explores the question of how language has changed over time and how book printing is related to digital communication channels, said Jacobs. (dpa)
