An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 hit the Los Angeles area on Monday, August 12, shortly after noon (around 9:20 p.m. Paris time), announced American Geological Survey USGS.

A hospital shook, and residents said glasses and dishes shook in several places. The Los Angeles Fire Department said it had received no initial reports of damage or injuries as it inspected the city’s infrastructure.

The quake was felt from Los Angeles south to San Diego, and east to the Palm Springs desert area, according to the USGS report page. A small number of reports were recorded in the southern San Joaquin Valley, about 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Los Angeles.

The earthquake was centered near the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, on the northeast side of the city, about 7.5 miles (12.1 kilometers) deep. It was the first day of school for the Los Angeles Unified School District. At least one high school, John-Marshall in Los Feliz, told parents it had evacuated buildings to check for damage. He hasn’t noticed any yet.

The quake came less than a week after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck southern California and was felt heavily in Los Angeles. This earthquake did not cause serious injury or damage.
