Distinguishing between Covid-19 and flu is not easy due to their common symptoms. But according to researchers, two symptoms are “very reliable indicators” of Corona.

Since the beginning of 2020, the Coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 has spread worldwide, leading to a pandemic. As a result, a significant amount of research has been conducted to understand the symptoms of Covid-19 accurately.

A recent study by researchers at University College London has shown that the acute loss of sense of smell or taste is a “very reliable indicator” of a Covid-19 infection. The study examined data from health centers in London and found that 78 percent of individuals with a sudden loss of sense of smell or taste carried Covid-19 antibodies. Additionally, 40 percent of these individuals did not exhibit cough or fever, suggesting that the loss of smell and taste is a significant symptom of Covid-19.

Lead author Rachel Batterham highlighted the importance of early detection of Covid-19 symptoms, rapid self-isolation, and testing to curb the spread of the disease. Batterham emphasized that governments worldwide should prioritize the loss of sense of smell and taste as a criterion for self-isolation, Covid-19 testing, and contact tracing.

The study also revealed that people who had lost their sense of smell were three times more likely to have Covid-19 antibodies than those who had lost their sense of taste. Batterham recommended that individuals who experience a loss of smell should self-isolate and take a Covid-19 test.

In addition, the study included quotes from individuals describing the sudden loss of their sense of smell or taste, offering insight into how these symptoms are experienced.

Given the significance of these findings, individuals who experience symptoms potentially indicative of a Covid-19 infection are advised to isolate at home and seek medical assistance. Furthermore, individuals who have been in contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case should contact the health department for further guidance.

The reliable identification of Covid-19 symptoms is crucial for effectively managing the spread of the virus and protecting public health. Governments and health authorities should consider implementing measures to prioritize the loss of sense of smell and taste as key indicators of Covid-19 infection.

The study’s results provide valuable insights into improving the early detection and management of Covid-19, contributing to efforts to control the pandemic’s impact on global health.
