Gregg Musgrove acquired the recordings after an acquaintance purchased a storage unit in the city of Van Nuys, California. It contained the recordings, according to Hollywood Reporter.
The storage unit previously belonged to music producer Bryan Loren, who has also worked with artists such as Whitney Houston and Sting.
Inside where cassette tapes and audio tapes with twelve unreleased songs Jackson had worked on before the release of his Grammy-nominated album “Dangerous” in 1991.
Unluckily for Jackson’s many fans, a lawyer hired by Musgrove has been informed by Jackson’s estate that they own the copyright to all of the late artist’s recordings and compositions – so they cannot be released publicly.
the estate emphasizes to Hollywood Reporter that they have the master recordings of the recently discovered songs in their vaults, and that “nothing commercial or otherwise can be done with the copies.”
Some of the songs have only been rumored to exist, while others have been partially leaked, musgrove informs Hollywood Reporter. He adds that “a couple are not even known in the world.”
Some tapes contain recordings of Jackson and Loren apparently discussing the songs and the creative process.
– Hearing Michael Jackson actually talk and joke was really fun, Musgrove says.
The recordings include a track titled “Don’t Believe It,” an apparent reference to allegations against Jackson regarding sexual abuse of minors. In another, “Truth on Youth,” it seems that Jackson performs a rap duet with LL Cool J.
It was not clear what Musgrove may have paid his acquaintance for the tapes, but he could still come out ahead. He plans to offer the tapes to major auction houses, and buyers are expected to line up.
