It’s not a harmless hobby: “Urbexers” visit forgotten places and roam around buildings that have been abandoned for years and have fallen into disrepair. The term “Urbexer” stands for “Urban Exploration” – what is meant is the discovery and photographic documentation of so-called lost places, a leisure activity that has become fashionable in recent years.

This requires not only camera equipment, but also a very special instinct and a good deal of courage. First of all, the objects have to be found, which are mostly in the provinces and have been forgotten.

On the other hand, the tours through the collapsing buildings prove to be dangerous. The daring ones have to be careful of rotten ceilings and climb stairs whose steps may lead nowhere.

Don’t take anything with you – except your pictures

Two of these “Urbexer” adventurers are Mike Vogler and Thor Larsson Lundberg, who intensively visited twelve forgotten places in Germany: from the factory owner’s villa to a sanatorium to the former FDGB holiday home.

Her motto for her idiosyncratic expeditions was: “Take nothing with you – except your pictures. Leave nothing behind – except your footprints.” Now they both have the results of their research in the illustrated book “Lost Places – Germany’s forgotten places”, which was published by Heel Verlag on the Plaza label. On the 176 pages, they present their favorite lost places not only with lots of photos, but also with detailed descriptions and descriptions of the eventful history of the forgotten horror places.

The authors deliberately refrain from providing precise location information in order to protect the haunted sites from further vandalism. “Real ‘Urbexers’ do not change anything about the locations they visit, leave no rubbish behind and behave inconspicuously during their expeditions,” they write in their foreword to “Lost Places”.

On the following pages of the photo series we present two of her twelve objects.
