Lothar Matthäus trained the youth team at TSV Grünwald for two years. That is now over – the 63-year-old reports difficulties with his parents. And he is clear.

Lothar Matthäus is no longer the youth coach of TSV Grünwald. The reason: clearly the parents of the young footballers. “I have resigned from my coaching position. It was a successful two years. The players caused fewer problems than the parents of the kids,” said the German national soccer player with the highest cap on “Sky90 – the soccer debate.”

Even the experience of 150 international matches apparently did not help the 1990 World Cup captain avoid criticism of his performance in office. “And then I thought to myself, I’ll have to spend the whole day on the phone and listen to everything I’m doing wrong. Everyone’s child doesn’t play enough. Then I thought to myself: let someone else do it, maybe they’ll do it better,” said the 63-year-old.

The former world footballer has been in charge of his son Milan’s team at the Bayernliga newcomer’s youth team for the past two seasons.

The long-time captain of the DFB team last worked as a coach in professional football in 2011, and was dismissed as national coach of Bulgaria in September of that year. The former midfielder previously worked as national coach of Hungary (2004-05), in Brazil at Atletico Paranaense (2006) and in Israel at Maccabi Netanya (2008-09).

For several years now, however, Matthäus has been working successfully as a TV expert, both on weekends for the Bundesliga broadcasts on the pay-TV channel Sky and for the German team’s international matches, which are shown on free TV on the private channel RTL.
