Former South Gyeongsang Province Governor Kim Kyung-soo, who was reinstated after being included on the list of special pardons for Liberation Day, said on the 13th, “I will think carefully about what role I can play in contributing to our society.”

Former Governor Kim wrote on his social networking service (SNS) that day, “I once again sincerely apologize for causing concern to many people because of my work,” and “I will look back on the path I have taken and spend more time reflecting.”

He continued, “I will carefully consider the meaning behind the criticism of those who opposed the lottery,” and “I will think carefully about what role I can play in contributing to our society.”

Former Governor Kim’s remarks are interpreted as hinting at the resumption of political activities.

Earlier, President Yoon approved the ‘special pardons, special commutations, special reinstatement of civil rights, and special reduction measures’ that were decided at the Cabinet meeting that day.

The list of special pardons for Liberation Day includes former Governor Kim, former Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Affairs Cho Yoon-sun, former Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Affairs Hyun Ki-hwan, who served time in prison for the so-called “white list” incident in which the Blue House illegally supported conservative groups, former Senior Secretary to the President for Policy Ahn Jong-beom, former National Intelligence Service Director Won Se-hoon, and former Daejeon Mayor Kwon Seon-taek, who were all implicated in the “state affairs meddling incident.”

Former Governor Kim was sentenced to two years in prison by the Supreme Court in July 2021 for the ‘Drew King incident’, and was exempted from serving the remaining five months of his sentence in December 2022 through a special New Year’s pardon by the Yoon Seok-yeol government, but was not reinstated.

With this decision to reinstate the lottery, former Governor Kim is now able to run in the upcoming local elections and presidential election.
