The 19-year-old, who scored to give San Marino their first ever win, was not born the only time the tiny republic last won a match.
That’s because San Marino’s 1-0 win over Liechtenstein in the Nations League on Friday came two decades after San Marino also beat Liechtenstein by the same scoreline in a friendly.
“We didn’t sleep last night,” said Marco Tura, a former international referee who heads the San Marino Football Association. “During the celebrations, there were people screaming and there were people crying.”
San Marino have not won a single match in 141 previous competitive matches.
The team also scored in three recent competitive matches, but lost to Denmark, Kazakhstan and Finland.
Torra attributes the improvement to San Marino’s academy, which has allowed players such as Nico Sensoli, who scored the winner against Liechtenstein, to play for his country instead of joining local Italian clubs.
San Marino is a mountainous region and one of the oldest republics in the world, located within the Italian city of Rimini.
San Marino leads Group D of the UEFA Nations League after getting (3) points for the first time from a win. As for Gibraltar, which has not played yet, and Liechtenstein, they have zero points so far.
San Marino will look to build on their two wins in their next two games against Gibraltar and then Liechtenstein in November. But they face Moldova in a friendly first on Tuesday.
