It is a figure of the Socialist Party who is gone. Louis Mexandeau died on Monday at the age of 92, while on vacation in his chalet in Saint-Gingolph, between Switzerland and Haute-Savoie, announces Arthur Delaporte, current socialist deputy for the second district of Calvados.

Former minister of François Mitterrand and former deputy of Calvados (from 1973 to 2002), Louis Mexandeau was a strong man of the Socialist Party. He was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 2013 by President François Hollande.

Faithful to Mitterrand

Louis Mexandeau had settled in Normandy in the early 1960s to teach history there, before making it his electoral stronghold. This history graduate was one of the historic barons of Mitterrandism, alongside Pierre Joxe, Louis Mermaz and Paul Quilès, supporting François Mitterrand from his first presidential campaign in 1965.

Nearly 20 years after the death of the latter, he still wore a black hat and a red scarf, like the first socialist president of the Fifth Republic. Originally from Caen, he was Minister of Posts, Telegraphs and Telephones (PTT) between 1981 and 1986, we owe him in particular the launch of the Minitel in France.

An “unfailing commitment”

Since the announcement of his death, the tributes rain. “He is a statesman, companion of François Mitterrand, and the emblematic figure of socialism in Calvados who died, writes Arthur Delaporte on X (ex-Twitter). We are losing an activist of unfailing commitment. Humanist endowed with an immense culture, the finesse of his political analysis, his jovial humor and his visceral commitment to the left will be missed. »

Joël Brumeau, mayor of Caen, pays tribute to “one of the emblematic figures of the city”, a “man of culture, with a strong temperament”.

Laurence Dumont, former member of Calvados also pays tribute to him. “To do politics, he said, you have to love people. Mex loved them, she wrote on her Facebook account. It is for them that, as a tireless activist, he worked all his life. He assumed political responsibilities, mandates, ministerial functions with François Mitterrand, with the sole ambition: to serve people. This power to inspire is rare”
