A pioneer of modern microbiology, his work had an enormous impact on various fields of natural sciences and helped save millions of lives.

He was born on December 27, 1822 in the small town of Dole in eastern France.

During his youth he showed a talent for painting and aspired to become an art teacher.

He began his academic career with a degree in mathematical sciences and at the age of 25 he obtained a doctorate in science with a physical-chemistry thesis. Since then, chemistry was his field of study and the path by which he would achieve all his successes.

At 30, Lous Pasteur was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his discoveries in tartaric acid research.

One of his most notable achievements was the development of the process that bears his name, pasteurization. He began studying fermentation applied to the preservation of wine and milk, theorizing that contamination by microorganisms was the factor responsible for their rapid deterioration.

After almost a decade of experiments he demonstrated and patented the pasteurization method. The discovery opened a new world of possibilities for food preservation.

Pasteur demonstrated that the growth of microorganisms was not due to spontaneous generation, theorizing the idea that every living being comes from another previous one.

This work represented a revolution for biology and allowed him to formulate the germ theory of infectious diseases, according to which microorganisms could be transmitted from one person to another.

Due to his study of germs, he fought insistently to promote hygiene in medicine.

Another fundamental contribution of Louis Pasteur was in the development of vaccines, promoting the revolutionary method of creating them from the pathogen itself that causes the disease in humans.

In 1885 and after several years of testing with animals, Pasteur was successful in vaccinating a child who had been bitten by a dog with rabies, a lethal infection. The treatment worked, opening new avenues for medicine.

He died on September 28, 1895 due to cardiorespiratory arrest.
