Los Angeles – The US actor Ryan O’Neal, star of films such as “Love Story”, “Paper Moon” and “Barry Lyndon”, is dead. His father died “peacefully” today, said son Patrick O’Neal ( 56) known on Instagram. He was 82 years old.

The actor’s daughter, Tatum O’Neal (60), told People magazine that she felt great sadness. “I loved him very much and I know he loved me too,” the actress (“Paper Moon”) wrote in the statement. She will miss him forever.

Patrick O’Neal paid tribute to his father as a Hollywood legend and his “hero”. He did not give a cause of death.

Her partner Farrah Fawcett died of cancer in 2009

Ryan O’Neal spoke about having prostate cancer in 2012. He had already been diagnosed with leukemia in 2001. His long-time partner Farrah Fawcett (“Charlie’s Angels”) died of cancer in 2009.

The father of four had three children from two marriages. His eldest child is actress Tatum O’Neal, with whom he filmed the nostalgic tragicomedy “Paper Moon” in 1973. His youngest child from his relationship with Fawcett, son Redmond, was born in 1985.

O’Neal and his film partner Ali MacGraw became famous overnight in 1970 with “Love Story”. The romance between the Harvard student Oliver from a wealthy family, who marries the beautiful but unsuitable Jenny against his father’s wishes and ultimately loses her to cancer, moved millions of moviegoers to tears. Director Arthur Hiller’s melodrama received seven Oscar nominations, including for the two main actors.

Fellow actresses pay tribute

At the height of his career, O’Neal made the screwball comedy “Is What, Doc?” (1972) alongside Barbra Streisand, and “Paper Moon” (1973) with daughter Tatum and, two years later, directed by Stanley Kubrick’s social satire “Barry Lyndon”.

Streisand, 81, paid tribute to O’Neal. The news of his death was “so sad,” the star wrote on Instagram about a shared photo. They made two films together, “What’s Up, Doc?” and “The Main Event”. “He was funny and charming and will be remembered.”

“Rest in peace, dear Ryan,” wrote actress Mia Farrow (78) on Instagram and posted several set photos together. In the 1960s they filmed the US television series “Peyton Place”. At the age of 18, she was very shy and secretly admired him. “He was so confident and very, very funny!” Farrow reflected.
