/ Al-Azim Agricultural District, north of Diyala Governorate, warned on Thursday of a major danger threatening the winter agricultural plan in the district due to water scarcity and low water releases.
The former head of the Al-Azim Council and the most famous wheat farmer in the district, Muhammad Ibrahim Dhaifan, told Shafak News Agency that more than 30 thousand dunums of wheat are threatened with destruction due to water scarcity, lack of rain, and lack of water releases from the Al-Azim Dam, indicating that the rate of water releases is 8 m3/s, while the district needs 15 m3/s at least to meet the needs of the winter plan.
He explained that the wheat crop has entered the second irrigation phase, and water revenues are still scarce and insufficient to complete irrigation, despite the demands and appeals to the General Authority for Reservoirs and Dams, affiliated with the Ministry of Water Resources.
In addition, specialized sources confirmed that the Al-Azim Dam’s stock has decreased from 150 million m3 to about 100 million m3, which amounts to the dead stock that cannot be drained.
Al-Azim district (60 km north of Baqubah) is the most prominent agricultural area in Diyala and is called the Diyala food basket. It includes 400 thousand dunums of agricultural land and 45 agricultural villages. It is famous for exporting the annual production of dates and marketing it to the Diyala regions and other governorates.
The district represents the wheat production exchange in Diyala and has been leading production rates for many years.
