Loyola Chicago Softball Suffers Heartbreaking 9-8 Loss to Miami (OH) in Eight Innings

A hard-fought battle at the SDSU Season Kickoff ended in disappointment for Loyola Chicago softball on Sunday, February 8, as they fell to Miami (OH) by a score of 9-8 in extra innings. The game, characterized by offensive bursts and resilient play from both sides, ultimately saw the RedHawks capitalize in the bottom of the eighth.

Loyola Chicago started strong, posting three runs in the second inning, but Miami (OH) quickly responded, taking the lead before Loyola battled back to trail 5-4 in the third. The Ramblers continued to demonstrate tenacity, narrowing the gap to 7-6 in the fourth and eventually tying the game at 7-7 in the sixth, thanks to a crucial run scored by sophomore Alli Pawlowicz.

The momentum swung in Loyola’s favor in extra innings when Pawlowicz crossed home plate again, giving the Ramblers an 8-7 advantage. However, Miami (OH) answered with two runs in the bottom half of the eighth, securing the 9-8 victory. Freshman pitcher Katie Geydoshek was charged with the loss for Loyola after entering the game from the bullpen.

“I’m proud of how we competed today,” said Loyola Chicago head coach Alicia Abbott. “It was a full team effort filled with some great pitching, the long ball, speed on the bases, and defense to back it up. The mindset the whole game was to get ahead, play to win, and respond fast. We’re headed back home ready to work this week to get back on the field in Florida.”

Key Performances Fuel Competitive Matchup

The game showcased several standout performances. Senior Sierra Sass demonstrated aggressive base running, successfully stealing two bases. Sophomore Addison Borg led the Ramblers’ offense, going 1-for-3 with a home run and a remarkable three RBIs. Junior Liz Sedakis also contributed, scoring a key run in the third inning to keep Loyola within striking distance.

The Ramblers’ next challenge will be at The Spring Games tournament hosted by Bethune-Cookman in Leesburg, Florida, beginning on Friday, February 13, and continuing through Sunday, February 15. This tournament offers Loyola Chicago an opportunity to build on their competitive spirit and refine their game strategy as they continue their season.
