Although sales of pure electric passenger cars and plug-in hybrids total 11,562 units, 42% more than the previous year, sales of cars with the DGT ECO badge in Spain have another protagonist: LPG.

In the accumulated of the year, electrified passenger cars account for 11.7% of the total market, but still far from the European average (21%). Alternative vehicles with 43,597 sales account for close to half of the market, according to figures provided by Handy.

Sales of gas vehicles grew by 161.8% in November with 3,254 units registered, representing 3.37% of the market share in the month. For the year as a whole, sales of these vehicles accumulate 25,065 units, 68.8% more than in the same period of the previous year. The cumulative quota for the year is 2.43%.

In addition, the conversions of combustion vehicles to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will close the year with a volume of more than 3,800 units, which will be 8.5% more than at the end of 2022, according to estimates by the Transformers Association. of Vehicles (Astrave).

These data show the consolidation of LPG as an alternative fuel while the mobility technologies of the future are being developed.

As explained by Repsol, LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or Autogas is characterized by being a gas in its natural state, but which changes to its liquid state when it is subjected to low temperatures and low pressures. This characteristic facilitates its handling in refineries, storage, transportation and for consumption by the end user. This fuel can be used in a wide variety of means of transport, always applying the most optimal technology depending on the type of application.

LPG can be used to fuel the engines of light and commercial vehicles using bi-fuel technology (gasoline and AutoGas) or dual-fuel technology (diesel and AutoGas), indicated for heavy vehicles and vans, and not for passenger cars.

From Astrav have highlighted that the increase in conversions to LPG is in line with the increase in registrations of gas cars registered in Spain this year, sales of these vehicles increased more than 200% in October.

The main reasons users have for converting their car to LPG are the savings it represents compared to the price of gasoline or diesel, and obtaining the ECO label to drive through low-emission areas without having to change vehicles.

Astrave points out that LPG savings for drivers range between 25% and 35% compared to gasoline or diesel prices. Likewise, the association offers a discount of 200 euros on Repsol AutoGas fuel for customers who carry out the transformation of their vehicle in one of the Astrave workshops before the end of the year.
