Lucía Mariel Arana Peña is known for being the first woman specialized in Medical Physics in Guatemala. He is currently working at a hospital in Estonia, where she is focused on advancing breast imaging methodologies.
Recently, the Guatemalan was part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
Lucía Arana, the first Guatemalan specialized in Medical Physics to triumph in Europe
Lucia Arana has stood out in the field of science by being the first female medical physicist in Guatemala. He graduated in Applied Physics from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala and then decided to specialize with a master’s degree in Advanced Studies in Medical Physics at the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Italy.
Her passion for science also led her to share her knowledge as a teacher at the Usac School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, inspiring future generations of Guatemalan scientists. Additionally, she earned her PhD in physics from the University of Trieste in Italy.
Medical Physics, an interdisciplinary discipline that combines the principles of physics with medicine, plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The Guatemalan’s work in this area has focused on the development of breast imaging techniques, carrying out her work at the Tartu University Hospital, in Estonia. This is one of the largest hospitals in the country.
Participation in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the institution founded by the Nobel Prize in Physics Abdus Salam
On April 10, 2024, Lucía had the honor of participating in the 60th anniversary of the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. Founded in 1964 by Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, ICTP is a leading institution promoting scientific collaboration and knowledge exchange globally.
At this event, Lucía shared her testimony as an alumni, highlighting the importance of ICTP in global scientific development. The celebration aimed to show how the institution promotes scientific collaboration and knowledge exchange in various fields, including medical physics. Lucía, along with professionals from Brazil, Ghana, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Cuba and other countries, shared her experience and knowledge. The French physicist and 2012 Nobel Prize winner Serge Haroche was also present at the event.
Lucía Arana’s participation in the 60th anniversary of the ICTP highlights her professional career and highlights her as an ambassador of Guatemala on the international science stage. It is a pride that we Guatemalans are represented by women like Lucía, who inspires future generations of scientists, not only in our country, but internationally.
