Ahead of a strike planned for tomorrow, the German company Lufthansa announced that it is canceling flights at the airports in Frankfurt and Munich. Both cities are hubs for the German airline. In total, over 1,000 flights will be canceled, a move that will affect approximately 134,000 passengers

The German flag carrier Lufthansa announced today (Tuesday) that it is canceling almost all flights from Frankfurt and Munich due to the ground crew strike planned for tomorrow. The company also said that flights will be canceled today and later this week, as the effects of the one-day strike are felt for the next few days. In total, over 1,000 flights will be canceled in a move that will affect approximately 134,000 passengers.

The German trade union has called for the roughly 20,000 workers who make up Lufthansa’s ground crew to strike in an effort to put pressure on management in ongoing wage negotiations. Michael Nigman, head of human resources at Lufthansa, criticized the move and called it “a premature escalation after only two days of negotiations in what has so far been a round of constructive collective bargaining.”

He added that the strike will affect “especially our passengers during the peak travel season”, and added, “it burdens our employees in an already difficult phase of air traffic”.

Lufthansa said its main hubs in Frankfurt and Munich would not be the only airports affected by the strike. The airline takes into account that there will be noticeable effects at the airports of Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover and Stuttgart.
