Lufthansa Suspends Flights to Tehran Due to Middle East Tensions
Airlines belonging to the German Lufthansa Group have suspended flights to Tehran until August 8 due to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to Day.Az, citing TASS news agency.
“Based on an updated safety analysis, the Lufthansa Group is once again adjusting its flights to the Middle East. All flights to Tehran have been cancelled until August 8 inclusive,” the airline stated in a statement.
Previously, Lufthansa announced the suspension of flights to Tel Aviv until August 8 and to Beirut until August 12. The airline is offering passengers affected by these measures the option to cancel or rebook their flights free of charge.
The tensions escalated following the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in an Israeli strike on his residence in Tehran on July 31. Iran accused Israel of carrying out the attack with the support of the United States. In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatened severe retribution against Israel.
