Luka Dončić delivered a 42-point performance with 13 assists and seven rebounds on Monday night, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 138-117 victory over the Miami Heat at Crypto.com Arena and pushing their record to 6-2.
Luka Dončić is playing basketball on a plane entirely of his own right now. Over a blistering 24-hour stretch, the Los Angeles player racked up a staggering 87 points across consecutive Lakers victories, culminating in a 138-117 rout of the Miami Heat on Monday night. Fresh off a 45-point, 15-assist masterclass against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, Dončić returned to the floor to carve up Miami’s defense with 42 points, 13 assists, and seven rebounds on 14-of-24 shooting.
The Slovenian star has now poured in at least 40 points in four of his past five games. Head coach JJ Redick acknowledged the brilliance of his star player, admitting to reporters that he simply does not take the performances for granted.
Doncic began with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds in yet another dominant first quarter. Through seven games this season, his opening-period average sits at 15.0 points, and he has reached at least 13 points in every single one of those matchups except one. Reaching 24 points before halftime, Doncic then added another nine points during the initial 4 1/2 minutes following the intermission, stretching the Lakers’ advantage to 93-74.
Despite playing on Friday and subsequently needing to fend off the Raptors Sunday evening, Doncic maintained his rhythm seamlessly. He’s averaging 37.7 points per game. He is averaging 43.4 points per game in that stretch of four 40-point performances in his last five games.
Miami’s Defensive Schemes and the Heat’s Rough West Coast Start
For Miami, the trip to Los Angeles marked the opening of a five-game West Coast road trip. The Heat opened a five-game West Coast trip with their fifth loss in seven games to begin the season. The Heat hadn’t played since Friday. When displayed on the arena’s scoreboard, Heat president Pat Riley received a loud ovation from the Lakers supporters. The Lakers unveiled a statue of their Showtime era coach outside their downtown arena last season.

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra noted before tipoff that Dončić creates an entire pick-and-roll coverage all to himself due to his unique mastery of the floor. That sentiment was echoed by Heat big man Bam Adebayo, who outlined the team’s pragmatic approach to slowing down the player.
We’re just going to try and make him make difficult shots. Obviously, guys do that in this league. For us, just making him see double and think a little bit. Just try to make guys miss.

While Doncic sat to begin the fourth quarter, Reaves filled the void as Miami failed to mount a serious comeback attempt down the stretch.

Austin Reaves scored 27 points and Walker Kessler added 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Lakers. Kessler backed up Doncic by securing his third consecutive double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while guard Austin Reaves shot an efficient 10-for-15 to finish with 27 points and five assists. Although Lakers forward Ziaire Williams was back in action after missing three games due to a foot injury, Jake LaRavia retained the starting role he previously filled.

The offensive flow allowed Los Angeles to dominate while Doncic rested. The victory also placed Dončić alongside rare historical company: his run of dominance through the first half mirrors a feat last accomplished by Kobe Bryant in 2007 when Bryant recorded at least 20 points during the first half in five consecutive games. Doncic has now joined the late Lakers great in the record books.
