The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, appointed General Marcos Antonio Amaro dos Santos on Thursday to head the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI), the body with ministerial rank in charge of presidential protection.

The appointment, made in a closed-door ceremony in Brazil, occurs weeks after his predecessor, Marco Edson Gonçalves Dias, resigned following the release of a video showing members of the GSI circulating passively among the Bolsonaristas who attacked the headquarters of the powers in Brasilia, on January 8.

Due to these images, the members of the GSI were accused of alleged collusion during the attacks that caused severe damage to the Planalto Palace, Congress and the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

After the facts, Lula openly expressed distrust towards this body and has gradually taken away powers. Last week, he ordered the dismissal of 27 soldiers who were part of the portfolio.

Marcos Antonio Amaro dos Santos is a 65-year-old reserve general, who was already at the head of the GSI in the government of former leftist president Dilma Rousseff.
