Last night the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, arrived in Colombia to carry out a two-day official visit.

This diplomatic meeting has as its main objective address bilateral strategic issueswith special emphasis on the protection of the Amazon.

During his stay, President Lula will meet with Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the Casa de Nariño, where They will discuss various topics of shared interestsuch as trade, investments, sustainable development, Amazon cooperation, social programs, human rights and family farming.

In addition, both delegations will hold meetings to discuss specific issues of mutual interest., such as the implementation of the Belém do Pará Declaration of 2023, pharmaceutical regulation, bioceanic corridors, tourism, homologation of university degrees and electrical interconnection. The signing of several cooperation agreements is expected to strengthen strategic alliances in human rights and rural development.

“They are two countries that have a significant contingent of Afro-descendants and indigenous people, and have as a priority, attributed by their rulers, the strengthening of these sectors in society,” highlighted João Marcelo Galvão de Queiroz, director of the Department of South America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.

As part of the agenda, the Brazil-Colombia Business Forum will be held, in which 300 businessmen from both countries will participate, organized by ApexBrasil and ProColombia.

Finally, President Lula will participate in the inauguration of the Bogotá International Book Fair 2024, where Brazil is the guest country of honor. The event, under the motto ‘Read Nature’, highlights the importance of reading and the preservation of the environment.

Brazil is Colombia’s third trading partner, with bilateral exchange that reached USD 6.1 billion in 2023. The presence of more than 70 Brazilian companies in Colombia reflects the solid economic link between both nations.
