Lula swears in General Marcos Amaro as GSI minister

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) signed a decree, published this Thursday (31) in the Official Diary of the Union,
that changes the structure of the Institutional Security Office (GSI). The decree takes effect on September 15.

The changes foresee a sector entirely dedicated to presidential security, with the creation of the Presidential Security Secretariat,
also responsible for the security of the vice president and his family, in addition to the official residences. In the previous structure, the Secretariat for Security and Presidential Coordination was also responsible for organizing events, travel and ceremonies.

Since the coup attacks on the headquarters of the Three Powers on January 8, Lula has demonstrated his distrust of the military. Currently, the Federal Police (PF)
looks after the security of the president and Janja da Silva.

General Gonçalves Dias, after being filmed walking in the Planalto Palace while coup leaders were still walking through the building, was exonerated from his position. In May, General Marcos Amaro took over the portfolio in his place, already under the forecast of a redesign of the Ministry.

The text of the decree also provides that the travel area will be separate, in charge of a member of the Air Force, and that strategic matters should have their own secretariat.

The new structure of the GSI foresees a division into four folders: 1) Secretary of Presidential Security; 2) Secretariat for Coordination and Aerospace Affairs; 3) Secretariat for Monitoring and Management of Strategic Issues;
e 4) Secretariat for Information Security and Cybernetics.
