The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke out, on the morning of this Wednesday, 18th, regarding the bombing of a hospital in Gaza Strip this Tuesday, 17. “The attack on Baptista Al-Ahli Hospital is an unjustifiable tragedy. Wars don’t make any sense. Lives lost forever. Hospitals, houses, schools, built with so much sacrifice, destroyed in moments. I repeat this appeal. The innocent cannot pay for the insanity of war”, wrote the president on his profile on X (formerly Twitter). In addition to the position, which did not hold any side responsible for the conflict, Lula also republished his appeal in defense of Palestinian and Israeli children, made in the first week of the war. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least 471 people died in the bombing. Hamas blames Israel for the attack, while Israeli authorities point to the Islamic Jihad group as responsible for the massacre. The number of deaths caused by the war rose considerably after the bombing. According to the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, 1,400 people died on the Israeli side. The Palestinian Ministry of Health has recorded 3,478 casualties. In other words, in total, there are 4,878 confirmed fatal victims of the conflict in the Middle East.

Lula’s statement was given moments before the UN Security Council (United Nations) reject the resolution of the Brazil to the war in the Middle East which has been taking place since October 7th. The Brazilian proposal had 12 votes in favor, one against and two abstentions, from the United Kingdom and Russia. You USA were responsible for vetoing Brazil’s proposal, claiming that in the text there is no mention of Israel’s right to defend itself. For a resolution to be approved, it must have the votes of at least 9 of the 15 members of the Council, including the permanent members – United Kingdom, China, France, Russia and the United States
