The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, announced this Friday that he accepted the invitation to participate in a section of the G7 leaders summitwhich brings together allied countries among the most developed in the world, in Hiroshima, Japan, on May 20 and 21, an official statement said.

Main economy of Latin America, Brazil is the only guest from the region to the G7 summitwhich will also be attended by India, Korea, Vietnam, Australia, Comores and the Cook Islands.

Brazil and other countries will participate in a section of the summit called “external link” to discuss the progress of the world economy and the geopolitical situation.

The invitation to Lula, who is in London on an official visit for the coronation of King Charles III, was made two weeks ago by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

This will be the sLula’s optimal participation as a guest at a G7 summitafter having done so six times in his previous terms (2003-2010).

“Lula’s participation consolidates the perception of balance in the country in the position on sensitive issues on the international scene. Among others, the challenges facing the international community in areas such as peace and security, health, development, gender, climate, energy and environmental issues should be discussed in the external engagement segment of the G7,” the statement said.

The members of the G7 are the United States, Canada, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan.

Lula recalled last week that his participation in the G7 plus Russia summits in the first decade of this century led to the activation of the Group of 20 (G20), which included developing nations to face the global financial crisis originated in United States with the bankruptcy of the mortgage system.
