Rio de Janeiro: Lula da Silva was sworn in as the president of Brazil. This is Lula’s third term as president. Addressing the nation, Lula, the leader of the Left Workers’ Party, said that he would fight for the country’s poor and the environment.
He said he is taking up the protection of the Amazon rainforest. Lula added that her eyes fill up when she sees people begging near vehicles parked on the street. After assuming office, the President also announced a 35-member cabinet. 11 of them are women.
Lula came to power after defeating incumbent President Bolsonaro’s right-wing party in November’s election. He is the first president of Brazil to serve three terms. Tens of thousands came to the capital Brasilia to witness the swearing-in ceremony.
