Ricardo Lewandowski was chosen by Lula to take over the Ministry of Justice

This Thursday (11), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appointed Ricardo Lewandowski, retired minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), as the new Minister of Justice and Public Security.

In an interview with O Globo, the future head of Justice stated that he sees public security as a ‘big challenge’, and that the topic will be his initial priority when taking on the role.

“This attention, of course, will be done in absolute respect with what the Federal Constitution says, regarding the shared responsibility between the federative entities”, he said.

Lewandowski also praised the work of Flávio Dino, his predecessor at the Ministry, and assured that he intends to act in continuity with the work that was being developed, including in the field of public security.

“I am against the discontinuity of public policies, so I will continue on a path without ruptures with what was being developed by minister Flávio Dino, who surrounded himself with a competent technical team”, stated the retired STF minister.

Lewandowski said that he has not yet defined names for his team, and that he will evaluate the current composition of the ministry in a meeting with Dino. During the announcement of the appointment to the portfolio to the press, Lula stated that he has no intention of influencing the future minister in assembling his own team. “I want people to create the team they are going to play with”, declared the PT member.

Ricardo Cappelli, now executive secretary of the Department, received praise from President Lula’s nominee. “He is a competent coach, with whom I have a good relationship,” he said.

Lewandowski said that, by accepting Lula’s invitation to take over the Ministry of Justice, he took on a mission given to him by the president. “I want to participate and help in the construction of a more fair, harmonious and supportive country project. I intend to make my contribution,” he said.

Ricardo Lewandowski will be appointed on the 19th, and will take office on February 1st.
