President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Thursday (3) that his government does not rule out oil prospecting and exploration in the Foz do Amazonas region, adding that the decision of Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Resources Natural) is not definitive. The president added that he wants to “continue dreaming” about oil exploration in the region, but that his government will be very careful.

Lula gave an interview to radio stations in the Amazon region. At one point, a journalist from the state of Amapá asked him if he could continue dreaming of oil exploration off the coast of Amapá or if the decision was final. “I am going to tell you that you can continue dreaming and I also want to continue dreaming. We had Petrobras with a platform prepared to do research in this region. There was an Ibama study that said it was not possible, but that Ibama study is not definitive , because it reveals technical failures that Petrobras has the right to correct. We are discussing that,” the president said in the interview.

The representative defended the investigation in the region, to find out whether or not there is oil in the Foz do Amazonas region. And he said that then his government will have to make a decision, taking into account ways to avoid environmental disasters.
