States hit by heavy rains

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) signed this Friday (14th) a provisional measure that allocates an amount of R$ 280 million to the states affected by heavy rains. Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Pernambuco and Alagoas will be helped by this initiative.

The MP foresees the opening of an extraordinary credit with the objective of financing emergency actions of protection and civil defense in the affected states. The resources will be made available by the Ministry of Regional Development and will be used for the immediate response and recovery of areas and infrastructure damaged by the rains.

An extratropical cyclone caused destruction in several Brazilian states, with strong winds knocking down trees and leaving thousands of people without electricity. In addition, flooding occurred in several cities. In Rio Grande do Sul, a person lost his life due to the collapse of his house.

The wind gusts, which reached 140 km/h, caused damage in more than 50 municipalities in the state. Sede Nova, in the northwest of the state, was one of the most affected locations. In Rio Grande, an elderly person lost his life, while in São Sebastião do Caí, rising river levels resulted in street flooding.

In addition to Rio Grande do Sul, the cyclone also caused damage in Santa Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo.

In Alagoas, dozens of municipalities declared a state of emergency due to the storms. The government announced that people affected by the storms in the state will receive aid of R$800, in addition to additional benefits, such as rural development (R$4,600) and anticipation of Bolsa Família.

In Pernambuco, several cities in the Zona da Mata Sul declared a state of emergency after the heavy rains that hit the region. The government is monitoring the situation and providing assistance to affected areas.
