The Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, called the governments of the world to “act together” and adopt “lasting solutions” to the problem of hunger, which is “unacceptable” in the world.
“Hunger is the most degrading of human deprivations, it is an attack on life, an aggression against freedom,” said Lula when announcing in Rio de Janeiro the creation of the Alliance against hunger and poverty.
“In the 21st century“Nothing is more absurd and unacceptable than the persistence of hunger and poverty,” he said.
The new mechanism, which will be officially launched in November, is a priority of the Brazilian presidency of the Group of the 20 largest economies on the planetwhose finance ministers are meeting today and tomorrow in Rio. The meeting will mark one of the last stages before the summit of heads of state and government scheduled for 18 and 19 November.
The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty will seek common financial means to fight hunger and replicate initiatives that work at local levels.
