“It’s a huge page in the history of the town that is being turned,” breathes the mayor of Angerville, Johann Mittelhausser (without label). Friday, Lucien Chaumette, who was mayor of the town (4,400 inhabitants) for two decades (1993-2014) and who sat for nearly 50 years at the municipal council table, died at the age of 91 . His funeral will take place this Wednesday, at 2:30 p.m., at the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Eutrope church in Angerville. A register of condolences was opened at the town hall.

With 49 years of elected office, 280 municipal council meetings, 260 married couples and 2,551 new residents welcomed, the former mayor’s record is enough to make one dizzy. When he took over from Gabriel Thirouin as head of the municipality in 1993, Lucien Chaumette already had solid experience in local politics. A member of the municipal council since 1965, he rose through the ranks one by one until being elected mayor.

“I owe him a lot”

“He devoted half a century to the town and under his leadership, many important projects saw the light of day,” continues Johann Mittelhausser, citing the creation of the Bois de la Fontaine industrial zone, the reconstruction of the hall Guy-Bonin multipurpose school, the creation of the cultural center or even the renovation of the city center. “His legacy as mayor and local elected official for half a century as well as his commitment to our city will remain forever engraved in our collective memory,” he adds.

Mayor at only 26 years old, Johann Mittelhausser learned a lot alongside his predecessor. “When he opened the doors of the municipal council to me, I was 20 years old,” remembers the elected official. For him, confidence did not come from age but from the motivation of the person in front of him. Just as Gabriel Thirouin had done with him, he was not afraid to trust the youth. I owe him a lot and I will never forget that. »

When Johann Mittelhausser succeeded him as mayor, Lucien Chaumette remained faithful to what he had announced, namely to completely withdraw from political life. “It was never omnipresent or intrusive,” continues Johann Mittelhausser. But I knew I could call him. For me, he was the memory of the town. It was very reassuring for a first mandate. »

Passionate about racing

As soon as his death was announced on Friday, the mayor paid tribute to him on the city’s website. “Today we say goodbye to a figure in our town, a man committed as an elected official but also an active member in numerous associations throughout his life, starting with the town’s football club, his sport par excellence, where he started at a very young age, we can read on the page dedicated to him. We will have the opportunity, in the coming days, to pay tribute to him with all the gratitude we owe him. »

In Sud-Essonne, the aura of the former mayor has radiated well beyond the borders of Angerville. “I knew Lucien Chaumette in 1983 when I was elected mayor of Valpuiseaux,” recalls Jean Perthuis (without label). At the time, he was not yet mayor. He sat on the Angerville municipal council. He is one of the elected officials that I have always appreciated. He didn’t make a lot of noise but he was always efficient. He is a great man who knew how to manage his town very well. »

For the mayor of Étampes, Franck Marlin (LR), Lucien Chaumette will forever remain “Lulu”. “Lulu, he was the boss, he was a mayor like no other anymore,” he says on the phone without trying to hide his emotion. On Sunday mornings, he played races at the village café. It was his great passion, horses. » Franck Marlin also describes “a man close to the people” who could receive residents around a coffee. “He was a gentleman who was respected. A great man, a remarkable person. »
