LUMC Students Gain Valuable Experience Through Abroad Program

The Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) has been dedicated to providing its students with a unique and enriching educational experience through its abroad program. In recent years, the LUMC has heavily invested in the design of the program to ensure that it offers not only a fun outing but also a steep learning curve for the students, as well as local students and supervisors who participate.

During the third year of various bachelor’s programs at the LUMC, students have the opportunity to take an elective course in Cuba, Indonesia, or Tanzania. The program involves conducting research in these countries for four weeks, working with local colleagues to conduct field work, lab and data analyses, and ultimately presenting their research results at the partner university upon their return to the LUMC.

One student, 20-year-old Sem Teeken, a Biomedical Sciences student, shared his experience from Cuba. He described the program as an eye-opening opportunity to experience (bio)medical science from a global perspective, with hands-on experiences such as attending operations and witnessing deliveries.

Similarly, medical student Jet Vroemen, 20, expressed her excitement to participate in the program in Tanzania. She found the experience to be “special and exciting,” and noted how the Tanzanian students and supervisors were very hospitable and supportive throughout the program.

Puck Versteegh, another 20-year-old Biomedical Sciences student, shared her experience from Indonesia, where she participated in a program focused on researching parasitic infections in children. She found it to be both fun and educational to work with people from a different culture and to learn more about the country.

The students returned this week and will be presenting their research results during a final symposium on Friday, November 10. Interested parties are welcome to attend the symposium to hear about the students’ experiences and the research they conducted during their time abroad.]
