Luthe, Germany – Music teacher Albrecht Drude is hoping for a harmonious 60th birthday celebration this Thursday, March 5th, with a unique invitation extended to a chorus of past students. Drude is planning a “flashmob” style gathering in his garden, inviting anyone who has ever sung his original song, “Hallo zusammen,” to join him for a collective performance. The event, however, remains uncertain as responses have been limited so far, leaving Drude unsure of how many will attend this unusual birthday party.
For nearly 35 years, Drude has been a fixture at the Musikschule Wunstorf, teaching violin since 1991 and leading both choirs and ensembles, according to the school’s website. He also develops music education concepts for elementary school children and manages the school’s press relations. But it’s “Hallo zusammen” – a song he composed for his “Musikwerkstatt” teaching concept 25 years ago – that forms the heart of this birthday wish. The song is now a staple greeting for his seven children’s choirs and string classes, and is even used in Hildesheim, at another local string class.
Drude estimates that around 3,000 children have sung “Hallo zusammen” with him over the years, performing it approximately 400 times annually. He’s hoping to recreate that experience, bringing together generations of young singers for a special rendition on his birthday. The gathering is scheduled for 5:00 PM at his home on An der Böhmerke 1 in Luthe.
The plan is simple: welcome guests, sing “Hallo zusammen” together, and then offer adults a toast with sparkling wine or orange juice. Drude is preparing for a large turnout, setting up tables to track attendance and a donation box to benefit the local Naturerlebnisbad (nature experience pool). He’s even prepared for a bit of inclement weather, stating he won’t be deterred by light rain, though a heavy downpour could force a cancellation.
Recognizing the potential for a large crowd, Drude has informed his neighbors, offering them the use of their gardens if his own becomes overcrowded. The situation is somewhat unpredictable; even as he has personally invited around 200 current choir and string students, the actual number of attendees remains unknown. He expressed concern that a lack of widespread publicity might result in a small gathering. Conversely, he jokingly noted that if 3,000 people show up, local traffic reports might mention the celebration and advise drivers to avoid the area.
Drude’s musical career extends beyond teaching. He also plays violin in the Wunstorf bands “The Klezmen” and “Reel Live” (Irish Folk), demonstrating a broad range of musical interests. His dedication to music education, however, is clearly the driving force behind this unique birthday celebration.
As Thursday approaches, the question remains: will the flashmob succeed? The answer will be revealed at 5:00 PM in Luthe, as Albrecht Drude awaits the arrival of those whose voices have echoed with “Hallo zusammen” over the past three decades. The event’s success will be measured not just in numbers, but in the shared joy of music and the celebration of a life dedicated to fostering a love of music in others.
The next update will come on Thursday evening, as the results of Drude’s invitation become clear. Share your own memories of music teachers who inspired you in the comments below.
