The president of the Lele Luzzati Foundation, Sergio Noberini, curator of the great illustrator’s collection, is asking the institutions for a decision on the fate of the headquarters, currently housed in the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, and for financial aid.
A safe location and support for the Casa Luzzati in Genoa dedicated to Emanuele Luzzati, one of the best-known Italian illustrators: this is requested by Sergio Noberini, president of the Lele Luzzati Foundation, which manages the fund left by the family and animates the Casa Luzzati with exhibitions and educational initiatives. Emanuele Luzzati (Genoa, 1921-2007) was set designer and creator of costumes for six hundred shows, illustrator, soul of culture (he created the Teatro della Tosse with Tonino Conte), author of dozens of books. Two Oscar nominations obtained (with Giulio Gianini, for the animated films La gazza ladra, 1964, and Pulcinella, 1973); received three Ubu Awards.
Now the location where his works are exhibited in Genoa is at risk, says Noberini: «What was once called the Luzzati Museum, after twenty years in the Porta Siberia location, has had the honor of receiving hospitality at Palazzo Ducale from June 2021, as Casa Luzzati. A house, because Lele didn’t like the word museum. Out of fidelity to the artist, we want him to be a pole of culture, multifaceted like him».
The Lele Luzzati Foundation, which had a fund with 300 works by the artist from the family, however requests a decision regarding the fate of the venue, inaugurated in June 2021 with the exhibition Sipari Incantati, promoted and supported by the Municipality of Genoa and by the same Lele Luzzati Foundation. «Since then there have been various interlocutions – continues Noberini – with the Municipality and the Region, on the fact that it is necessary to consolidate the existence of Casa Luzzati. At the moment, however, we only have a letter of intent: an agreement must be signed to sign a commitment relating to the entire space, which is highly visited, in such a significant center for the city. And obtain financial support, at least initially, apart from the contributions foreseen for the exhibitions to which we provide excellence. Casa Luzzati must overcome this moment of non-formalization and become part of the heritage of Genoa».
Genoa, on the other hand, adds Noberini, was a great love of Luzzati: «He himself said to me: ‘She’s my best muse’. In fact, she was the inspirer of Luzzati’s work, like Dante, Boccaccio or Calvino ». Many materials from Casa Luzzati, with original works dedicated to Italo Calvino, continues the president, will be on display in the great exhibition for the centenary of the writer’s birth, in October in Rome, at the Scuderie del Quirinale.
«A heritage – concludes Noberini – which should be recognised, and also networked with similar European realities. We would like to speak with the institutions, the Municipality, the Region and the Ministry of Culture. Otherwise, the risk is that carrying out these non-decisions means having to dialogue with other cities, such as Turin or Rome, where Luzzati also worked. It would be a shame to distort a journey of over twenty years».
