Lydia Ko (New Zealand), who won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and then won the AIG Women’s Open (total prize money of $9.5 million, approximately 12.56 billion won), the last major golf tournament of the season, expressed her emotions.

Lydia Ko recorded a 3-under 69 with 4 birdies and 1 bogey in the final 4th round of the tournament held at the Old Course at St. Andrews (par 72) in Fife, Scotland, UK on the 26th (Korean time).

Lydia Ko, who finished with a final total of 7-under 281, won the tournament by two strokes over the group tied for second place, which included Shin Ji-ae, Nelly Korda, Lilia Bu (all from the U.S.), and Yin Luoning (China). Lydia Ko received $1,425,000 (approximately 1.89 billion won) in prize money.

Lydia Ko, who secured her spot in the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame by winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, has also achieved her next goal of winning a major tournament. It is her third major tournament win, following the 2015 Evian Championship and the 2016 ANA Inspiration, and her 21st career LPGA Tour win.

“It’s been crazy what’s happened over the past few weeks. It’s been so wonderful and unbelievable,” Ko said in her victory press conference. “Honestly, I couldn’t think of anything better, to win the AIG Women’s Open. It’s even more special because it’s on the Old Course at St. Andrews.”

“I first played here in 2013 when I was 16. I hoped I was a little older and wiser than then,” he continued. “It feels like a fairy tale to win at such a historic and special place.”

Regarding the retirement rumors that circulated after the Olympics, he dismissed them, saying, “Before I won the gold medal at the Olympics, I heard, ‘Entering the Hall of Fame is not the final destination, but rather a gas station on the way to the final destination.’ After hearing that, I thought it would be difficult to quit golf right after entering the Hall of Fame,” and “I plan to continue playing and focus on the tasks ahead of me.”
