MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Lyon coach Fabio Grosso suffered a head injury after the bus carrying the team was the target of an attack by fans who threw projectiles ahead of Sunday’s French League game against the Marseilles.
The Lyon bus was attacked on its way to the Velodrome Stadium and was left with some broken windows. Grosso was injured by falling glass fragments and required medical attention for his face, which was bleeding profusely.
Less than an hour before the opening whistle, the French league had not decided whether the match would take place under such circumstances.
Grosso scored the winning penalty for Italy in their shootout victory over France in the 2006 World Cup final.
Both clubs have been under pressure recently.
Despite replacing Marcelino with Gennaro Gattuso as coach in September, Marseille continue to show an inconsistent performance with one win and three losses in their last four league games.
Lyon is the only team that has not won so far this season in the league. Replacing Laurent Blanc with Grosso in September has not worked for last-place Lyon.
