For the first time, three Lithuanian discus throwers competed in the Olympics in 2000 in Sydney, where Virgilijus Alekna won the first of two Olympic champion titles, the 27th was finally in 1992. World record holder Mykolas Alekna and his brother Martynas, who entered the Olympic Games according to the ranking (22nd place), started in group A and had three attempts each. Martynos Alekna’s best result this season is 66m 59cm, and his personal best is 67m 23cm.

Meanwhile, Mykolas broke the 38-year-old world record this year when he threw the discus 74 m 35 cm in April in the USA. Mykolas is called one of the main contenders for Olympic gold.

Martynas threw the discus in the first throw in only 58.34 m. Mykol was also unlucky – he didn’t launch the disc very well, it flew at 55 meters and the Lithuanian specifically crossed the sector boundary.

So, after the first throws, the Aleknos brothers were in 11-14 places.

In the second throw, Martynas threw the discus a little less – 57.53 m. Meanwhile, Mykolas pulled himself together and calmly threw the discus even 67.47 m and took the ticket to the finals. He didn’t need a third shot. No one threw better than M. Aleknas: ours took the first place in the overall standings.

With the third throw, Martynas flew the tool the farthest – 58.66 m, but he did not make it to the finals, taking 15th place in the final standings of group A.

In group A, without a Lithuanian, the Austrian Lukas Weisshaidinger also entered the finals ahead of time with qualifying measurements – 66.72 m. and Australian Matthew Denny – 66.83 years.

Andrius Gudžius, who is participating in the third Olympic Games, also competed in Group B. He was 12th in Rio de Janeiro, sixth in Tokyo.

A. Gudžius currently ranks sixth in the world ranking. His best result this season is 66m 57cm, his personal best is 69m 59cm.

With the first throw, the Lithuanian threw the discus 60.83 m and was in 6th place. With the second throw, A. Gudžius significantly improved his situation – the disc flew 64.07 m. and was already fourth in his group. His third attempt was unsuccessful. In the general standings, A. Gudžius reached the final with the 10th result.

Only the German Clemens Pruefer fulfilled the norm in this group – 66.36 years. World champion Kristjanas Čech threw the discus only 64.80 m and was ninth overall.

Athletes who threw the discus 66 meters or twelve athletes who achieved the best results could immediately enter the final.

A total of 32 discus throwers, divided into two groups of 16, participated in the discus qualifying competition for the Paris Games.

Olympic record (69 m 89 cm) from 2004. belongs to Virgil Alekna, but his young son, the world number one, believes that this result will be improved in Paris. In order to win the gold, you will have to throw the discus over 70m.
