In this competition, M. Alekna started in the strongest third group – there were three groups in total, and 26 athletes competed, who threw three throws each at the beginning.
In the first group, the best discus thrower was Jordan Roach, who threw 63m 69cm and took the lead. In the second group, Mika Sosna performed best and improved his personal result by more than 3 m – 68.69 m. He rose to first place after the performances of the second group.
Everyone was waiting for the third group and the 26th participant, on which was written the surname of a Lithuanian. Already with the first throw, M. Alekna flew the discus 72.71 m and became the leader of the competition.
He set a personal best this season, the fourth time in discus history to do so.
In the second throw, he threw the discus 70.32 m, and in the best third attempt even 72.89 m. M. Alekna got even closer to the record mark.
It became the best result since 2006.
Out of 26 participants, after three shots, the best 8 remained, who had to throw an additional 3 shots each. In the fourth attempt, the Lithuanian discus thrower threw the tool 70.51 m.
And here, on the fifth attempt, a miracle happened – M. Alekna, who calmly entered the sector, threw the discus 74.35 m. and broke the planet record.
The competition was then suspended so that the referees could double-check the accuracy of the result and ratify the record and submit it to the International Association of Athletics Federations.
After a good 15 min. they continued and the Lithuanian threw his last sixth throw. It was already not so far away: 70.50 m.
So M. Alekna became the winner of the competition, Roje Stona was second, throwing the discus 69.05 m, and M. Sosna won the third place, showing a result of 68.96 m.
21-year-old M. Alekna started this year’s season with a bang last week, when she threw the discus 71.39 m in Berkeley (USA) and broke her career record and then achieved the best result of the year in the world.
The town of Ramona is famous for its extremely favorable weather conditions for discus throwers: this time, in an open and more grass-like stadium, where there are no stands, and the protective net of the discus sector could have seen the world champion Jurgen Schult himself, the athletes threw record throws without much difficulty.
M. Alekna Ramone has been smashing since 1986. unshaken world record, which belonged to the German Jurgen Schult – 74.08.
During the entire history of discus throwing, more than 73 m has been thrown by Mykolas, German J. Schultas, M. Alekna’s father Virgilijus Alekna – 73.88 m and Estonian Gerdas Kanteris – 73.38 m.
