Maastricht Aachen Airport classified at level 2 in CO2 reduction program

by time news

The airport has been committed to reducing its emissions for years. This is done, among other things, by replacing lighting with LED lamps and starting with the generation of green energy. In addition, part of the equipment, such as the generating sets, a baggage carousel and tractors for baggage carts, was electrified.

Roel Ubaghs, Sustainability & Innovation manager at the airport, says: “This accreditation is a great recognition of the first steps we have taken as an airport. But we’re not there yet. For example, we will electrify more vehicles and appliances in the coming years, we will switch completely to green energy sources and we will reduce the consumption of natural gas to a minimum. The goal is to keep our emissions to the absolute minimum.”

Airport Carbon Accreditation-programma
The Airport Carbon Accreditation Program (ACA) independently assesses and recognizes the efforts of airports to reduce their carbon emissions through six levels: Mapping (1), Reduction (2), Optimization (3), Neutrality (3+ ), Transformation (4) and Transition (4+). These levels show how far airports are on their way to zero-emission operations. Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only airport-specific CO2 certification program worldwide and is based on internationally recognized methodologies.

Three other airports in the Netherlands are also part of this programme. Schiphol, Eindhoven and Rotterdam all score 4+, which means that they are in the transition phase. Brussels Airport is at level 3+, while Charleroi (2), Liège (2), Antwerp (1) and Ostend-Bruges (1) are scaled a few levels lower.
