French President Emmanuel Macron called a crisis meeting of ministers on Thursday after the second night of protests over the death of a 17-year-old boy shot by police in Nanterre, west of Paris.

In the early hours of today, French police arrested 150 people, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said. On Wednesday (28), the total number of prisoners was 31.

On social media, Macron said that “violence against police stations, schools, city halls, against the Republic is unjustifiable”.

“Thanks to the police, firefighters and elected officials mobilized. Meditation, Justice and calm should guide the next few hours”, he wrote.

the case

Hundreds of French people took to the streets after a 17-year-old was shot during a police stop in Paris. The officer shot the teenager and was taken into custody on Tuesday after the boy died in hospital.

Naël was in the car with two other people when they were stopped at a police checkpoint, according to the prosecutors involved in the case.

In the approach, he would have turned the vehicle back on and accelerated, which would have presented physical danger to police officers. “It was in this context that the officer used his firearm,” said Paris Police Chief Laurent Nunez.

The version, however, was contested by the young man’s family with a video that shows two police officers on the side of the vehicle and, while one holds the door, the other keeps the gun pointed at the driver. When the car accelerates, the policeman fires.

Two investigations were opened by the General Inspectorate of the National Police to investigate the case.
