It was the biggest concert of her career: Madonna performed in front of more than a million people on Saturday (May 4th) in the Brazilian coastal metropolis of Rio de Janeiro at the end of her world tour “The Celebration Tour”. The Brazilian news portal “G1” even speaks of 1.6 million. The fans did not have to pay an entrance fee – the free concert was given as a thank you and to celebrate Madonna’s 40-year career, according to the 65-year-old pop icon’s website.

“Here I am: There is the ocean, beautiful. There are the mountains, incredible. There is Jesus, amazing!” said Madonna during the concert, referring to the monumental Christ the Redeemer statue on Mount Corcovado. “I’m in the middle of heaven. Thank you for letting me be there.”

On Friday, fans blocked several lanes of the Avenida Atlântica coastal road on the famous Copacabana Beach in order to catch a glimpse of the “Queen of Pop” during a rehearsal. And it worked: Madonna stood on stage with a green mask and a tight-fitting black dress to rehearse.

According to the Rio Municipality The organization of the event was similar to that of a New Year’s Eve. Around 3,000 emergency services were involved in “Operation Madonna”.
