Madonna dominated the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on September 27, winning seven trophies from 11 nominations. Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony at the Peacock Theater, where Taylor Swift became the inaugural recipient of the Artist Director Honors and set new records.
Madonna Leads the Winners Circle with Seven Trophies
More than 40 years after her iconic Like a Virgin performance rocked the very first MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna emerged as the night’s biggest winner by claiming seven awards out of her 11 nominations, including artist of the year (three were awarded on the Sept. 27 broadcast). Madonna led all nominees this year with 13, thanks largely in part to the short film she made for her celebrated new album, Confessions II. The Queen of Pop’s victories included artist of the year, best dance, and multiple technical prizes for her short film Confessions II. Her clip also secured wins for best cinematography and best choreography, alongside a best collaboration award shared with Sabrina Carpenter for Bring Your Love.
The ceremony brought the biggest artists of the year together to celebrate the top songs and music videos chosen by fans at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Rapper Snoop Dogg took charge as the host for the star-studded ceremony, which took place in his hometown of Los Angeles and also featured an exciting lineup of presenters, including Off Campus stars Ela Bright and Belmont Cameli.

Taylor Swift Claims Director Honors and Historic Milestones
Taylor Swift followed close behind the night’s top winner, securing three awards from her nine nominations. Swift trailed closely behind, earning 11 nominations, and was presented with the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, a new award recognizing artists who have developed a distinct directorial voice and helped advance visual storytelling through music videos. The Life of a Showgirl singer-songwriter took home three out of her nine nominations. Later in the evening, Taylor Swift became the most-awarded artist in VMA history while her visual for The Fate of Ophelia — released via Republic Records — won video of the year.

Other major category winners marked significant milestones across global pop and hip-hop. Lisa has further cemented her place in VMA history; the BLACKPINK star is now the most-awarded K-pop soloist in the history of the ceremony. She first won a VMA in 2022 for LALISA in the Best K-pop category and later made history in 2024 as the first and only K-pop artist to take the VMAs stage for a solo performance. This year, her track Dream, featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, added another Moon Person to her collection after winning Best Pop. Meanwhile, BTS had a big night of their own, taking home three trophies and giving ARMYs plenty to celebrate, including a win for Song of the Year with Swim.
