Madras High Court Takes Up Case Against Acquittal of Tamil Nadu Ministers in Asset Hoarding Cases

The Madras High Court has decided to personally investigate the acquittal of Ministers Thangam Tennarasu and KKSSR Ramachandran in the asset hoarding cases. These ministers, who served during the DMK regime between 2006 and 2011, were accused of accumulating assets that exceeded their income.

Thangam Tennarasu, the former school education minister, along with his wife Manimekalai, faced charges of amassing wealth beyond their known sources of income. The case was registered in 2012 and was being investigated in the Srivilliputhur court. Surprisingly, the government accepted a petition filed by Minister Thangam in 2022 and ordered their release from the case.

Similarly, KKSR Ramachandran, the former minister for the welfare of backward people, and his wife Adilakshmi were charged with embezzlement. This case, registered in 2012, was also pending in the Srivilliputhur court. However, the court accepted a petition filed by Ramachandran and others seeking release from the case, leading to their release last July.

The anti-bribery department did not appeal against these two orders, prompting Madras High Court Judge Anand Venkatesh to take up the review petitions on his own initiative. These two cases will be heard tomorrow morning as the first and second cases.

It is worth mentioning that Judge Anand Venkatesh had already taken up the case against Ponmudi’s acquittal in an asset hoarding case. The Madras High Court seems determined to ensure fair and just outcomes in these high-profile cases.
