The floods in La Madrid are an unresolved issue, seven years after the last one, in April 2017, the most serious suffered. The great flood of 2017 occurred due to the fateful conjunction of natural phenomena (great flooding of the Marapa River) and an action caused by the hand of man: artificially diverting an important basin, that of the San Francisco River, directly towards the Marapa upstream. from Madrid. This river historically delivered its flows to a wetland area where it attenuated and from where it emerged gently. There is general consensus on the priority of returning the San Francisco River to its original floodplains to mitigate the risks of flooding in La Madrid.
