Madrid meeting calls for immediate halt to military attacks against Palestinians

The final statement of a meeting of ministers from Islamic and European countries, along with the European Union’s foreign affairs chief, on Friday, warned of “a dangerous escalation in the West Bank” and called for “an immediate cessation of military attacks against the Palestinians.”

The participants in the meeting in the Spanish capital, Madrid, stressed the “urgent need to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip immediately and without conditions by opening all crossings and supporting the work of UNRWA,” according to the statement.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said: “We hope that the meeting will contribute to advancing ways to end the war on Gaza. We are opening new efforts to support a future for the Palestinians, lasting peace and a two-state solution, and we are meeting to deliver a unified Arab, Islamic and European voice in this regard.”

The statement also called for the return of full control to the Palestinian Authority over the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing and the rest of the border, in addition to a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, including the Philadelphi Corridor.

The meeting called for the credible and irreversible implementation of the two-state solution in accordance with international law and agreed parameters, including the Arab Peace Initiative.

He stressed the importance of achieving a just and lasting peace that meets the rights of the Palestinian people and enhances stability, security, peace and cooperation.
