Reputation and presence in Europe. These are the two main benefits that it would bring to Madrid if it manages to be named as the new European headquarters of the authority against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, or AMLA (Anti-Money Laundering Authority).

But the list of positive aspects for this headquarters to be established in Madrid does not stop there. Under the #Madrid4AMLA campaign On social networks, no less than three public administrations —government, community and town hall— have come together to convince Europe that the Spanish capital is ready to host one of the great European agencies.

The battle is not going to be easy, the Spanish candidacy faces weighty names such as Vienna, Paris, Luxembourg or Frankfurt. As opponents it will also have Riga or Dublin, who also want to attract the new European Authority for the Fight against Money Laundering.

“Spain is a very Europeanist country. It is logical that a large European agency is in Madrid”, says Ana Rubio, head of financial regulation at BBVA. “It has excellent telecommunications, commercial and transport infrastructures, great economic dynamism and a cost of living lower than other European cities”, says Rubio.

And it is that the arrival of AMLA would create some 250 direct jobs and some more indirectly, especially in companies that will have to interact a lot with the agency. Your employees would be well connected with the rest of Europe by plane and with the rest of Spain with the AVE.

“Madrid is a city that is prepared to welcome not only AMLA workers, but also their families. We have a huge offer of international and bilingual schools, universities, a free healthcare network, with internationally prestigious hospitals. We are once again the European region with the highest life expectancy, a reflection of the high quality of life we have,” he says. Matilde Garcia Duartegeneral coordinator of the City of Madrid.
