Madurai takes steps to ease traffic congestion with new parking depots
Madurai, a bustling city in India, is set to address its ongoing traffic congestion issue with the construction of new car depots under the Smart City project. The Madurai Corporation has already completed a car depot at Palladuku, near the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple, and is now working on a second depot at Koripalayam.
One of the main causes of heavy traffic in the city is the parking of vehicles on the sides of major roads with high traffic, including areas like Kalavasal, Bypass Road, Arapalayam, Koripalayam, Tallakulam, and Mattuthavani. Recognizing the need to find a solution, Mayor Indrani Ponvasant announced during a recent budget meeting that the Corporation will build a second parking garage opposite Koripalayam Government Hospital.
In order to further reduce congestion in the city, a two-wheeler and car shelter will also be set up at Palladu, near the Koripalayam shopping complex. The Corporation has already requested contract proposals for the construction of this facility. Additionally, motorists have emphasized the need for a third-storey vehicle shelter at the Matthuthavani bus stand, which currently only has a two-wheeler shelter available.
These measures are part of the city’s efforts to transform Madurai into a smart city, characterized by efficient urban planning and improved quality of life for its residents. The new parking depots will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also provide a safe and organized space for vehicles, reducing the instances of vehicles parked haphazardly on the sides of busy roads.
