High Court orders removal of unauthorized buildings in Madurai
The Madurai branch of the High Court has ordered the government to remove the buildings of Anna Trade Union, T.M.S., and Trade Union Buildings, which were constructed without permission in the Madurai Bypass Road Government Transport Corporation headquarters. The order came in response to a case filed on the basis of a news report published in the ‘Dinamalar’ newspaper.
The petition was filed by Madurai Parktown Karupiya, who raised concerns about the unauthorized construction and use of electricity in the office premises of the State Transport Corporation. Karupiya alleged that the construction of additional buildings for the trade unions was done without proper permission and that the electricity was being supplied illegally from the office premises of the Transport Corporation.
Karupiya also claimed that he was suspended on false charges after objecting to the unauthorized construction and was subsequently transferred to a different branch. The petition highlighted the lack of action from the transport corporation and the power board, citing political influence as the reason behind their inaction.
In response to the petition, the High Court justices SM Subramaniam and V. Lakshminarayanan ordered the government to take action to remove the unauthorized buildings within 8 weeks following legal procedures. The government admitted that the buildings were constructed without obtaining permission and stated that the Collector, Corporation Commissioner, and Transport Corporation Managing Director should take action to remove them.
The court’s decision comes as a victory for Karupiya and a step towards addressing the issue of unauthorized construction and misuse of electricity in the government transport headquarters in Madurai. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding legal procedures and regulations, even in cases involving political influence.
