2-Story Building Collapses in Madurai Due to Heavy Rain

Madurai, India – The ongoing North East Monsoon rains in Madurai district have caused significant damage, including the collapse of an old 2-story building on Kaka Thopp Street last night. Fortunately, no lives were lost as the building was unoccupied at the time.

Heavy rainfall has led to waterlogged roads throughout the district, and ongoing construction work to lay pipelines in all 100 wards of the corporation has further inconvenienced citizens and disrupted traffic flow.

The collapsed building, which is non-residential, suffered damage to its contents, however, no one was present as the owner resides abroad. Corporation and revenue officials have visited the site to assess the damage.

Yesterday’s rainfall in various areas of the district ranged from 6.20 mm to 87.60 mm according to reports, with the airport recording the highest rainfall at 84.50 mm.

As for water availability in the dams, the water level in Periyar dam is 126.85 feet, holding 4018 million cubic feet of water, with a water flow of 2605 cubic feet per second. The Waikai Dam has a water level of 68.8 feet, holding 5338 million cubic feet of water, with a water flow of 2310 cubic feet per second.

Authorities are advising residents to exercise caution and to stay informed about weather updates as the North East Monsoon continues to lash the region.
