Municipal Corporation officials create controversy by putting up barrier to prevent chemical foam in Madurai

The actions of the municipal corporation officials in Madurai Ayanpappakkudi have sparked controversy as they put up a barrier to prevent the chemical foam coming out of the water.

In the past, there were over 25 Kanmais in the Madurai Corporation area, which enriched the city along with the Vaigai River. However, most of these Kanmais have now become urban settlements, with the ponds being named after the residential areas that now cover them. Despite efforts to protect and maintain the remaining dams, there has been little action to prevent the mixing of chemical waste water in Kanmais and the subsequent release of chemical foam into the Vaigai River and culverts.

As a result, frequent chemical foaming from the Vaigai river and many culverts of Madurai city has become a regular occurrence. The recent issue of chemical foam coming out of the irrigation channel of the Ayanpappakudi Kanmai has caused problems for motorists and has raised concerns about the potential impact on Madurai Airport.

The Municipal Corporation officials’ response to the issue has only added to the controversy, as they placed a curtain in the area of the foaming Kanmai bank and irrigation canals to prevent the foam from blowing onto the road. This action has sparked debate and controversy as to who should be responsible for preventing the mixing of waste water and the release of chemical foam.

The responsibility for preventing the mixing of waste water and the release of chemical foam is being disputed by different officials, with the Chief Engineer of the Corporation stating that it is the responsibility of the Public Works Department and Pollution Control Board to prevent such issues.

The debate over the actions of the municipal corporation officials and the responsibility for preventing the release of chemical foam continues to generate controversy and calls for action to resolve the issue.
