Mãe de santo in Carapicuíba, in the São Paulo metropolitan area, Odcidarewa Mãe Zana Yalorixa has been without a place to live since her 200 m² candomblé place of worship was demolished in December last year. Currently, she takes turns visiting friends and relatives, and struggles to find another property for her religious activity.

The measure was determined by the city council, which claimed that the property was at risk of collapsing due to the instability of the soil and structural problems. They are working on the premises for the construction of a creek to control flooding.

Zana associates the demolition with religious intolerance and says that there was a lack of dialogue with the municipal management of Carapicuíba. The works began in the middle of 2007 and last year they reached a part very close to their premises.

For its part, the City Council alleges that it has offered Zana a social income of R$ 500, in addition to a letter of credit so that the activities that were held in that place of worship can continue elsewhere, “however, it did not present the documents to be contemplated,” according to management.
