Maersk will launch a new intermodal service between Algeciras and Madrid in April

Maersk has announced that it will launch on April 13 a new weekly intermodal freight transport service between the Port of Algeciras and Madrid carried out by Renfe. Specifically, the new rail line for refrigerated goods will have a multi-client train and will include customs clearance services and direct delivery of containers to customer warehouses in Mercamadrid, according to Efe reports from sources in the Algeciras enclave.

So, the new service will take advantage of the Algeciras-Marín line, which currently has the service of a weekly refrigerated train for the transport of fish to Madrid. Through this incorporation, other products such as imported fruits and vegetables can be transferred.

In principle, the line will have a weekly frequency, departing every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. from the Isla Verde railway terminal and arriving at the Madrid-Abroñigal intermodal terminal at 3:00 a.m. However, they want to add two weekly trains in the coming months to cover this route.

One of Maersk’s objectives is that this new service allows it to capture export traffic from Madrid to Algeciras for its subsequent departure from the Cadiz enclave to international destinations in America or Africa.

Regarding the facilities of the enclave, it is worth mentioning that recently the Infrastructure Department of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras has announced that it wants to repair the defenses of the eastern and northern docks of Isla Verde Exterior, after having analyzed the state of conservation of every one of them.
